One of the biggest advantages of choosing IKEA for your kitchen renovation is the price. But the cabinet cost is only part of the story. Once you factor in assembly, installation, countertops, plumbing, electrical, and all the other pieces, the total can look quite different from what you expected.

We've been installing IKEA kitchens throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island for years, and we want to give you a transparent, realistic picture of what you'll actually spend. No surprises, no hidden fees — just honest numbers.

The Big Picture: Total Project Cost Ranges

Before we break it down by component, here are typical total project costs for IKEA kitchen renovations in New England:

Cost Breakdown by Component

1. IKEA Cabinets and Components

The door style you choose has a big impact. Budget-friendly options like AXSTAD or HAGGEBY keep costs down, while premium doors like BODBYN or LERHYTTAN cost more. Interior organizers, pull-out shelves, and drawer dividers add up too — they're worth it for functionality, but budget for them.

Pro tip: IKEA runs kitchen sales 2-3 times per year (read our guide to IKEA kitchen sales), and you can save 15-20% by timing your purchase right.

2. Cabinet Assembly

If you hire a professional to assemble your IKEA cabinets, costs vary based on the number of cabinets and their complexity. Most medium kitchens have 18-22 cabinets. Contact us with your IKEA order details for a free, itemized quote.

You can save this entire cost by assembling cabinets yourself — it's one of the most approachable DIY tasks in a kitchen renovation. Each cabinet takes 30-60 minutes. You'll need a drill/driver, a rubber mallet, and patience.

3. Installation Labor

Labor rates vary across New England. The Boston metro area and Connecticut's Fairfield County tend to be at the higher end. Western Massachusetts, most of Rhode Island, and central Connecticut are generally more affordable.

At Hearthstone Kitchens, we provide all-inclusive quotes that cover assembly and installation together, so you always know exactly what you're paying. Get a free estimate.

4. Countertops

Countertop costs vary widely depending on the material you choose. Contact us for a free estimate tailored to your kitchen.

5. Demolition and Removal

Demolition scope depends on the size of your existing kitchen and what needs to come out. Contact us for a free estimate.

6. Plumbing

Plumbing costs depend on the scope of work required. In Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, licensed plumbers charge varying rates based on the complexity of the job.

If your home has older galvanized pipes, we strongly recommend upgrading to copper or PEX while the kitchen is torn apart. It's much cheaper to do it now than later.

7. Electrical

Electrical work varies significantly depending on the age of your home and the scope of your renovation. Many older New England homes don't meet current code requirements. Read our electrical requirements guide for specifics.

8. Backsplash and Flooring

Backsplash and flooring costs depend on the materials you choose. Contact us for a free estimate based on your specific kitchen.

Regional Cost Variations in New England

Labor and material costs vary across the region. Here's a general breakdown:

Massachusetts

  • Greater Boston (Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline): Highest in New England.
  • North Shore and Metro West: Slightly below Boston — Salem, Lowell, Framingham areas.
  • South Shore and Cape Cod: Moderate, though seasonal demand can spike prices.
  • Western MA (Springfield, Northampton, Pittsfield): Generally 10-15% below Boston-area rates.

Connecticut

  • Fairfield County (Stamford, Greenwich, Norwalk, Westport): High — comparable to Greater Boston.
  • New Haven and Hartford metro areas: Moderate, good value for quality work.
  • Eastern CT (New London, Norwich): Generally more affordable.

Rhode Island

  • Providence metro: Moderate, typically 10-20% below Boston rates.
  • Newport and coastal areas: Can be higher due to seasonal demand and access issues.
  • Northern RI (Woonsocket, Cumberland): Most affordable in the state.

DIY vs. Professional: Cost Comparison

Here's a side-by-side for a typical medium kitchen (15 linear feet, ~20 cabinets):

ComponentFull DIYHybrid (DIY assembly, pro install)Full Professional

The DIY route saves significantly on labor costs. Most homeowners we talk to find the hybrid approach — assembling cabinets themselves and hiring pros for installation — to be the sweet spot.

Hidden Costs People Miss

After years of doing this, these are the costs that catch homeowners off guard:

  1. Eating out: Your kitchen will be out of commission for 1-3 weeks. Budget for meals out or a temporary cooking setup.
  2. Temporary kitchen setup: A folding table, microwave, and mini-fridge help make the renovation period more manageable.
  3. Wall and floor repairs: Old cabinet removal often reveals damage that needs fixing before new cabinets go in. The extent varies, but plan for some repair work.
  4. Building permits: Required in most New England municipalities for kitchen renovations involving plumbing or electrical. Fees vary by town.
  5. Unexpected structural issues: Old houses in particular can surprise you. We've found everything from rotted subfloor to improperly supported walls behind old cabinets. Budget a 10-15% contingency.

Ways to Save Money

  • Time your purchase for IKEA kitchen sales — save 15-20%
  • Assemble cabinets yourself — this is one of the biggest potential savings
  • Do your own demolition — straightforward work that saves on labor
  • Choose IKEA laminate or butcher block countertops instead of quartz — a major cost reduction
  • Keep plumbing in the same location — avoid relocating pipes
  • Install peel-and-stick backsplash — a fraction of the cost of traditional tile
  • Reuse existing appliances if they're still in good shape

Line-Item Costs for a 10x10 IKEA Kitchen in 2026

The cabinet industry prices everything against a 10x10 kitchen, two 10-foot walls in an L, about 20 cabinets. Here is what that kitchen costs in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island this year, line by line, using the ranges we see on real quotes.

Line itemValueMid-rangePremium
IKEA SEKTION cabinets (frames, doors, drawers, hinges)$2,500 – $3,500$3,500 – $5,000$5,000 – $6,500

Removal of the old kitchenDIY$500 – $1,000$1,000 – $1,500

Appliance installation (2–4 units)DIY$300 – $800$600 – $1,600

Typical all-in$7,000 – $10,000$11,000 – $16,000$17,000 – $24,000

Plumbing, electrical and gas work is not in the table because it must be done by licensed trades in all three states and varies enormously: reconnecting a sink and dishwasher in the same spot is a few hundred dollars, relocating them is thousands. Permits, flooring and painting are also outside the kitchen budget above.

Per-Cabinet Pricing: The Rule of Thumb

Installation scales with cabinet count, which is why we quote from your item list. A standard SEKTION base or wall cabinet runs roughly $125 to $225 to assemble, hang, level and finish. Add:

  • $75 to $150 per tall or pantry unit, because of height, weight and the number of interior fittings.
  • $100 to $200 per corner cabinet, for the fitting hardware and scribing to two out-of-square walls.
  • $300 to $600 for a second row of stacked wall cabinets, for the extra rail and alignment work.
  • $300 to $1,200 for an island, depending on size, whether it needs a platform, and panel work.

Count the frames on your IKEA order list, multiply, and add the extras, and you will land close to a real quote. Our cost calculator does the arithmetic and lets you toggle add-ons; our assembly cost guide covers the assembly-only and hybrid options.

What Makes Installation Cost More

Two kitchens with the same cabinet count can be quoted $1,000 apart. The reasons are almost always the house, not the cabinets:

  • Plaster-and-lath walls in pre-1950 homes add roughly 10 to 15 percent to the cabinet line. Every fastener needs a stud, plaster has to be pre-drilled, and the rail is shimmed against a wall that is not plumb. See hanging cabinets on plaster walls.
  • Uneven floors add 5 to 10 percent for leveling, and sometimes a plywood platform.
  • Walk-ups and condos add carrying time, elevator bookings and insurance paperwork.
  • Ceilings that are not level turn a simple crown detail into scribing or a bulkhead.
  • Plans that were never reviewed generate missing fillers and cover panels, which means return trips.

None of these are reasons to avoid an IKEA kitchen in an old house. They are reasons to get a quote from someone who has seen the walls, or at least the photos.

Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island Notes

Labor rates are similar across the three states; what differs is logistics. Massachusetts and Rhode Island kitchens come from IKEA Stoughton, Connecticut kitchens from IKEA New Haven, and Rhode Island has no store at all, so delivery and a careful day-one inventory matter more there. IKEA charges state sales tax on cabinets and countertops at the time of writing, so add it to the materials side of your budget. Permits for like-for-like cabinet replacement are often not required but every town decides; any plumbing or electrical work needs licensed trades and permits everywhere. Our permits guide and the Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island pages have the local detail, and our cabinet assembly and installation service page explains exactly what a quote from us includes.
